BERNIE PEYTON ORIGAMI

What inspires me to make origami sculptures is animal behavior in the wild.  I want my origami models to not only represent creatures but to appear to be alive. Typically I pose them in the second before something is about to happen, such as an attack from a predator.  Increasingly I include habitat in the sculpture to reflect the importance habitat has for supporting all life forms including humans. Sadly for many species time is running out for their survival.  In the course of my field research I have seen the destruction of entire valleys and the extinction of species.  My goal is to show the natural world we humans will miss as we transform this planet, and encourage people to preserve it.  I choose origami as an artistic technique because paper is pliable enough to express even the smallest details of a creature’s essence, and like my subjects, paper is fragile against the forces that destroy it.  It has taken me years to develop techniques that make my sculpture permanent but still express this fragility.
